Description | The introductory chapter by Vladimír Maňas summarises the historical development of religious confraternities in the Olomouc Diocese from the Middle Ages up to the time of their dissolution. Another article by the same author describes the close relationship between confraternities and the pilgrim movement. Zdeněk Orlita deals with the renewed interest in these institutions in the second half of the 19th century and the related survey organised by the archbishopric consistory that took place mostly in 1858-1864. The following paper by Tomáš Malý reveals the significant part the confraternities played in funeral and memorial services. In his second study Zdeněk Orlita focuses on the liturgical mobiliary of religious confraternities and its unfortunate fate in the period of Josephine reforms. Karel Müller deals with the membership registers of Baroque religious confraternities as remarkable sources for heraldic studies. From the late 17th century until their dissolution in 1783, the religious confraternities were among the most significant utilisers of printing services. Their wide range of types is dealt with by Vladimír Maňas. David Pindur describes the position of Baroque religious confraternities in the Austrian part of the Breslau Diocese. The textual part of the catalogue is concluded by an article by Tomáš Valeš on religious confraternities and their role in contracting for and organising individual artistic or handicraft orders. It is followed by the actual catalogue with exactly eighty exhibits, although the exhibition includes a few more. The catalogue is accompanied by a CD with the songs of Baroque confraternities recorded by the Ritornello Ensemble directed by Michael Pospíšil. |
