Description | The article deals with deixis and mainly anaphora in English and Czech and its translation. Using references to characters in fiction as its material, it focuses on personal pronouns as means of anaphoric reference. Personal pronouns are very often left out in Czech; even though the zero pronoun can carry the anaphoric reference in most instances, sometimes the construction has to be changed: when a coreferential string is interrupted by an element of another coreferential string in English, the referent of the first string can often be re-activated by the use of a pronoun; in Czech, such instances almost always require a repetition of the NP. Translators meet this requirement in most cases. In some, however, the difference leads to defective structures in Czech. Some known systemic differences between Czech and English - e.g. articles and the behavior of the subject - are mentioned, as well as the efforts to formulate rules - and eventually algorithms - for anaphora resolution. |
