Description | Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of severe vision loss in developed countries in the population over 65 years of age. In a study of aetiopathogenesis of AMD occurred in the last 10 years a significant shift. It was found that the influence of age is to reduce the number of cells of the retinal pigment epithelium (PE). This leads to a reduction in the number of melanosomes, which have a protective effect against the toxic effects of blue light in particular. Due to the increasing age is the accumulation of lipofuscin, protein aging, the activation of free oxygen radicals leads to accelerate the process of apoptosis (natural cell death). |
