Description This article endeavours to explain the current praxis of sanctioning and awarding moral satisfaction in environmental protection before ECtHR and other regional human rights bodies in the light of their constituting treaties and case law. As a logical consequence of the first principle of the Stockholm Declaration, which links human rights and the environment, and other milestones in the development of environmental norms, these courts have become increasingly involved in environmental protection. However, it seems doubtful whether the three principal regional human rights treaties, the European Convention on Human Rights, the American Convention on Human Rights and the African Charter on Human's and Peoples’ Rights, make sufficient allowance for efficent remedies.
