Description | Chickenpox is a widespread highly contagious acute viral disease. The course is usually mild in childhood, except in newborns and in children with congenital or acquired immune deficiency. The course is more severe in adults than in children. The most common complication is secondary bacterial superinfection of the skin. Hematological complications include thrombocytopenia. Primary chickenpox pneumonia is diagnosed in 20 to 30 % of adults. Acute cerebellar ataxia is the most common neurological complication. In 2009, 81 children were admitted with complicated chickenpox at the Department of Childrens fectious Diseases at the University Hospital, Brno, CZ. The majority of children had impetiginization of chickenpox, some of these progressing into abscesses with the requirement of surgical drainage. |
