| Description | A very generalized statement that the Czech language serves the needs of communication within the Czech language community does not match the actual language situation which is variable not only in time, but also from regional and social viewpoints. Besides, the inner history of the particular territory is reflected in it as well as changes in communication needs of the language community. Historical events may be such milestones, but their impact is not immediate and may disappear in the longer time horizon (e.g. the influence of Russian from the Soviet period). For a description of the language situation it therefore seems to be more fruitful to focus on periods when the inner situation of the community is stable and when there is sufficient material for commentaries about the language and information about the community of its users. The most recent period could be the era after 1989, but there still is not the sufficient distance necessary for commentaries relating to the stabilization of the present-day Czech language situation. |
