Description The paper presents preliminary results of an extensive research project conducted at the Faculty of Education Masaryk University in Brno, focused on education of children with special educational needs. The primary aim of the presented part of the research is to identify the circumstances and specificity of career choice in children with special educational needs, potential risk and protective factors of the choice. The authors chose combinations of quantitative and qualitative approaches; in the paper they present particular outcomes of three case studies of selected primary school children. The cases mentioned were observed in the course of two years in cooperation with school psychologists who performed the roles of so-called gatekeepers in the research, carried out a number of interviews and themselves became major sources of information as well as auditors guaranteeing the credibility of the data. The methods used included interviews with pupils, parents and teachers as well as analysis of various school documents. Presented paper has an empirical character and focuses on the school role in the career choice of pupils.
