Description | The present paper explains my elaboration and extension of Pavel Tichý's semantics of names in fiction. The doctrine does not intend to offer an official semantics of synchronically given language L. It aims rather to identify the entities to which a reader of fiction is related to. The arguments reveal that the semantic role of name in fiction is not to pinpoint a specific individual (as proper names of L do) or to introduce a modal condition, i.e. an intension with semantic content (as descriptions of L do), but to work as an individual variable. The theory is defended against objections raised by Stanislav Sousedík. |
