Description | This monograph is an interdisciplinary study drawing on pragmatics, discourse analysis and conversation analysis. The author analyses three genres of spoken English, private face-to-face conversation, private telephone conversation and public radio discussion, with the aim of identifying and classifying language means commonly used in spoken discourse and often labelled comment clauses and included along with discourse markers. The investigation has proved that these interactive markers contribute to the smooth flow of interaction and the establishment of coherence and can function as part of politeness strategies. |
