Description | The goal of this text is to gain deeper understanding of factors influencing the quality of life situation assessment of children in need. For the past two decades, such assessment of children in need and their families has been at the forefront of scientific research and public interest in countries with highly developed child protection. However, the Czech society has barely begun to discuss assessment-related issues. Accurate assessment represents a key step to effective intervention and lower risk potential for children in need. Professional assessment provided by social workers and other specialists results in relevant decisions with both short-term and long-term consequences to children’s lives. Both academic research and case studies of serious neglect demonstrate that assessment is a complex process influenced by various factors that brings about many questions. Insufficient quality of the assessment process, its incompleteness or even absence, may lead to serious negative consequences for the children involved. Therefore, this article presents Czech and international research findings on the assessment process and suggests principles that should guide good quality assessment as to minimize risks to the children in need. |
