Description There is a certain duality in Wittgenstein’s aesthetics. By being based on the language-game “culture” as portrayed in his conversations, his aesthetics is strongly normative and institutional. On the other hand, Wittgenstein’s remarks that deal with the concepts of genius, character and talent break with this institutional conception of art. I will devote my attention to a characteristic ambiguity in the concept of language-game. A language-game can be understood either as an object of comparison or as a part of our language. Depending on which view is emphasized, the “culture” can be considered as either institutional or expressive.
