Description | Article compares the role of stem alternation (of a certain type, e.g. gradation) in Finnish and Estonian. Gradation is traditionally described as a historical process and the bounds and similarities between gradation in different baltic-finnic languages are highlighted. When describing the role of these alternations in Finnish and Estonian standard languages, differences can be significant. In Finnish grade is tradionally predicted from the phonological structure, whereas in Estonian gradation has to be explaind in connection with the morphological category and paradigmatic type. The same can be in some cases found in Finnish as well. |
