Description | Electrical brain activity provides the objective information of human brain function. Of particular interest are cognitive, or the event-related potentials (ERPs): Contingent negative variation (CNV), P300 or P3, and the complex of middle and long latency evoked potentials, mismatch negativity (MMN) and bereitschaftspotential (BP) which are identifyed as slow cognitive potentials. Cognitive evoked potentials are considered as the result of activities of complex neuronal networks which are responsible for detection and processing of new incoming inputs, for the discrimination as well as mental processing. Slow cognitive potentials are related to the mental activities which are conscious as well as unconscious. Among the electrophysiological phenomenons which can be recorded, ERPs are closely related to the central nervous activities of daily living. The author provides the overview about the cognitive evoked potentials, the methodology and recording issues, the scalp and intracerebral distribution and clinical outcome. |
