Description A wound is a disruption of tissue cohesion of skin surface. The process of its healing is influenced by many systemic and local factors. The most important and discussed local factor is wound infection caused by germs. This information is known for dozens years, nevertheless it has not been exactly clarified under what circumstances it happens. The controversy develops over the three basic theories; these are a quantitative theory, a qualitative theory and a theory of synergism. The quantitative theory is based on the amount of germs in the wound with the definition of a boundary load (number) of germs in cm2 or in a gram of the tissue or in a millilitre of collected liquid. According to the qualitative theory not the amount but the pathogenicity of germs is significant. The theory of synergism takes a composition of germs, an immunological response of an injured individual and a quality of an injured tissue into account. The paper deals in more details with the effects of germs on the wound and on the course of the infection.
