Description | Back pain represents the second most frequent cause for visiting a doctor. Optimal management of acute low back pain is based on sorting patients into groups with different prognosis based on introductory clinical exam. Most cases (about 85 %) are those with non-specific back pain with favourable prognosis, whose diagnostics and therapy should by guided by a physician for at least one month and imaging examination should not be performed. Compressive neurological syndromes such as radiculopathies, neurogenic claudication syndrome or cauda equina syndrome are more serious and threaten patients with development of neurological deficit. Patients with spine involvement of defined origin such as tumor, inflammation or trauma are in danger of not only permanent neurological deficit, but sometimes in danger of their’s lives. Hallmarks of this most serious causes of low back pain are warning signs, s.c.„red flags“, that could be detected with detailed medical history and clinical exam. Patients with developing neurological deficits or red flags should be seen by a specialist and necessary imaging methods should be performed. |
