Description The chapter in "Chinese and Japanese Religions - collection of essays" describes the process of reinterpretation of traditional religious ideas in the ancient Chinese philosophical texts. The chapter demonstrates the close relation between religion and philosophy in ancient China. Three philosophical attitudes toward the religious ideas and practices are described: challenge and rejection; acknowledgement and inclusion into a new philosophical framework; reinterpretation and transformation into the idea of self-cultivation of human personality (development of god-like characteristics within the human). the basic features of religious ideas and practices in early China that are often valid for later periods of Chinese history, too. Due to the nature of received written texts the chapter focuses on state cults, i. e. to the religious ideas and practices common in elite and official stratas of the Chinese society.
