Description Neuroimaging methods enabled significant progress in the understanding of the neurobiology of major psychiatric conditions, such as Schizophrenia, Affective disorders, or Dementias. The question remains if they can be that useful even in Anxiety disorders. The aim of the paper is to present a systematic review of the neuroimaging studies tha speak of diagnostic validity, neurobiology, physiological correlates of clinical psychopathological phenomenons and treatment related issues in Anxiety disorders. Results: neuroimaging is able to differentiate between individual Anxiety disorders, such as Obsessive-compulsive disorder and other anxiety disorders, or between Generalized Anxiety disorder and Social Anxiety disorder. Quite consistent finding in anwiety disorders in amygdalar hyperactivity with reduced cortical, mality correlates with the clinical severity of Aniety disorders. Normalization of the pathological brain activity is a result of successful treatment, irrespective the treatment modality used. Moreover, the neuroimaging findings are able to guide the development of novel therapeutic approaches, as is the case of the deep brain stimulation of Obsessive-compulsive disorder.
