Description Interest of students in natural sciences shows a declining tendency all over the world. Chemistry along with physics belongs to the least popular subjects. Our research shows that one of the main causes of this state is the way chemistry is taught at schools. The students style of learning is currently changing due to the influence of information and communication technologies. It is thus necessary to seek innovative approaches to teaching chemistry. Using an interactive board is one of such approaches. The present paper describes outcomes of our design-based research in the form of an interactive multimedia textbook of chemistry for lower secondary schools. In one place, it integrates photographs, videos, interdisciplinary links, interactive exercises, audio recordings of a text of the given textbook, interesting facts and Internet links related to the subject matter of chemistry. The textbook has been compiled so that it helps teachers to alter the traditional style of teaching which is uninteresting for learners. It draws on studies dealing with characteristics of the present generation of learners, sometimes referred to as the Net generation, and respects their learning style.
