During the past few years, a number of traces of prehistoric chert quarries have been found. Their research is very demanding due to the distance and the depth of mining pits. Expansion of chert extraction in the old Bronze Age casts a new light on what we know about the prehistoric society. The internal objective of the project is to determine specific utilization of landscape, whose boundaries are limited by natural aspects. Position of the mining fields in vicinity of prehistoric settlement areas can help us to trace their functional relations. This possibility arises for the first time in Czech archaeology, since up to now, from hilly woodlands we have only known tumulus grounds and hillforts without having any evidence of systematic utilization of the whole area. The external objective is to identify mechanisms of distribution and utilization of extracted raw materials, and to compare it with imported flints.
