The project tries to find an answer to the question to what measure today´s Czech school (6-15) can be considered an institution with a democratic environment. The proposers consider the democratic environment inside the school a key condition necessary for the fulfilment of the basic objectives of schoolwork, which is the preparation of young people for a valuable life in a democratic society. The topic is considered in three dimensions: a) relations, values and beliefs; b) existing formal mechanisms and rules; c) real usage of possibilities which are monitored in the principal areas of the school functioning: in education, in personnel management, in organisation, in work with material sources, external school relations and the work of the school with visions. All these topics are related to the key groups of the school life: pupils, teachers, school managers, school employees and parents. The proposers base their approach in the principal attributes of the democratic models of school life management. There are two methodological procedures. It is the analysis followed by the synthesis of the existing relevant knowledge obtained from the Czech education research works, and then the analysis of the situation in selected schools and controlled work with the school managers on the changes of the internal situation leading towards democratic conditions. The results of both procedure lines will be compared and synthesized so that a report "of the democracy status" in Czech schools could be the principal output presented in conferences, in a specialised seminar and in a monograph-oriented publication.
