Václav Hlavatý devoted a significant part of his career to those areas of mathematics that are related to the search for a unified field theory, inspired by EInstein's relativity theory. His life and career strongly reflect both the developments of science and the major events in politicalhistory of the 20th century: the two world wars, the establishment of Czechoslovakia, the threat of the Nazi regime, WWII-occuppation, theovertaking of the government of Czechoslovakia by the Communist Party, and the Cold War. Centered around the fascinating biography ofVáclav Hlavatý, the proposed project will relate this story rich in interactions between mathematics and physics, and between science andpolitics, including Hlavatý's contacts with mathematicians and physicists abroad (Jan Arnoldus Schouten, Dirk Jan Struik, Albert Einstein). The objective of this project is compiling a detailed monograph on the life and work of an outstanding Czech mathematician Václav Hlavatý(1894-1969) in the context of the development of mathematics on the international level as well as in the broader cultural and political context
