The project is a part of the third wave of large - scale European longitudinal sociological research of values which is a follow up of two successful previous surveys carried out in Europe in 1981 and 1990. The Czech republic joined the European values p roject in 1990 and our project thus continues works done almost a decade ago. In 1990, both the applicant and the join applicant were members of the then Czech research team. Aims of our current project are fourfold : 1. to record values in important dim ensions of life of Czech population in 1999, e.g. religion, morale, sexuality, marriage and the family, work and leisure, education, political preferences and attitudes, social solidarity, social tolerance ; 2. to compare development of Czech value struc tures in 1990 and 1999 ; 3. by means of comparison of Czech value structures with their Western counter to find out whether there is value convergence or divergence taking place between European Union member states and Czech population ; 4. to get Europe
