Female entrepreneurship is a significant, but insufficiently utilized potential for creation of new
firms, jobs and innovation. Cultural, economic, but also psychological barriers underpin the
persistent and large gender gaps. Despite the interest among policymakers, rigorous research
on such barriers in emerging market and developing economies (EMDEs) is scarce.
Utilizing qualitative and quantitative empirical methods as well as applied theory, this project will
contribute to closing this knowledge gap with new and robust evidence on drivers of gender
gaps in start-ups and innovation in EMDEs. Uncovering the role of personal traits, social
networks and ICT skills in gender gaps in start-ups and innovation will help identify policies to
improve women's labour market outcomes. The proposed study is thus of great relevance and
aims to generate high quality academic publications.
