Description | This article envisages digital games as an interactive form of storytelling. It analyzes the communication strategies of the game Heavy Rain, which I consider a progressive engagement of several medial forms and genres, in terms of meaning, intention and effect. It construes a branched way of narration and the related choices and moral dilemmas or their consequences. The motion aspects of the contextual control interface and the effects of virtual representation to immersion of the player and his/her empathy with the character are illustrated by specific situations. I am interested in what terms are communication studies reporting effects of more passive media and how these theories are transformed when applied to interactive text. I ask myself questions related to the handling and the control of the meaning at the level of sender, channel and recipient, and respectively what this unstable, semiotic relationship implies for interpretive possibilities of the audience. |
