Description Cognitive deficit is considered one of the primary symptoms of schizophrenia; it affects approximately 40-60% of patients. The most disrupted cognitive processes include information processing, attention, memory, and executive functions. Again and again disorders of all memory types have been found; with the exception of procedural memory. The development of the imaging methods allows research into the neuro-anatomical correlates of cognitive deficits. Structural changes in the area of frontal and temporal lobe and extension of the ventricular system have been repeatedly found. Examination of cognitive functions is complicated for many reasons. It is diffícult to isolate individual cognitive domains; in addition, there is no uni-fíed test battery and terminological consensus. Therapy for schizophrenic patients should integrate pharmacological intervention, education, training of sociál skills and cognitive training. Cognitive performance usually decreases after the first episode of disease; the deficits of cognitive functions are stable ověř time and are relatively independent of clinical symptoms associated with the disease. Persistant cognitive dysfunction significantly influences sociál competence of patients, their labor performance, and quality of life.
