Description | Psychotherapy was initially developed in the context of psychiatry, gradually, however, it became an autonomous discipline involving a number of different (and often competing) theories. Even nowadays, psychotherapy is still applied in the field of health care. However, it has created a different discourse, which often comes into conflict with the medical discourse. The medical discourse can be characterized by aspects such as pathologization, specificity of effect, instrumental approach to treatment, and through other consequential aspects (e.g., individuation, or an expert attitude of a practitioner). Examples of psychotherapeutic theories, research designs and particular research studies are used to show that medical discourse is often unsuitable and that it is in the interest of psychotherapy itself to move beyond this discourse. |
