Description | Following on from research on the rhetorical function of direct quotation, presented by Docherty and Mach at the Breaking the Boundaries conference at Masaryk University in Feb 2020, this presentation explores the broader issue of defining, identifying, and tagging the general rhetorical functions used in L2 Bachelor academic writing on literary analysis. I will give a brief summary of the results of Docherty (2020) regarding the function of direct quotation, survey the rhetorical functions of interest in my ongoing PhD research, outline general corpus tagging techniques, and then provide an insight into the possible strategies for identifying function in the context of corpus interrogation. I will also outline the limitations of research of this type. The teaching implications of past and future research will also be discussed. |
