Citation
Description The chapter provides an introduction to a thematic volume on digital discourse analysis. It outlines the field, contextualizes the current situation, and introduces the framing issues, namely online users' discursive practices of convergence and controversy in digital discourses. The chapter. This involves: (1) the practices of convergence, concentrating on the establishment of positive interpersonal relations that involve, among others, affiliative work, bonding, and phaticity; (2) the practices of metapragmatic negotiation, revolving around the users' metapragmatic awareness and resulting in meta-level discussions on interactional norms and communicative appropriacy; and (3) practices of controversy, represented by mutual disalignment and conflict, often articulated with verbal aggression and various degrees of (im)politeness.
