| Description | The paper compares informative texts written in English and in Czech. The different conventions in the two languages have linguistic, as well as historical and cultural roots. Czech academic style resembles the writing styles of other languages in Central and Eastern Europe. Texts written in English are usually carefully organized, contain simpler lexical and grammatical patterns, including repetition, and have a more linear structure than texts written in Czech. The main concern is to present ideas in an easily comprehensible way. Texts written in English are primarily oriented towards the reader. Czech texts, by contrast, are often less logically organized, and contain more complex grammatical structures and a variety of synonyms, complying with the requirements of the Czech academic style. The main focus is to present the topic in all its complexity. Texts written in Czech are generally more intellectual than texts written in English; they are primarily oriented towards the topic. |
