Description The pre-reading period is essential for a successful development of reading competencies in children. The starting point of children with special educational needs or of handicapped children may be compared, to a certain degree, to their healthy peers as all of them depend on an intermediary of literary works. The pre-reading period then shows both connecting and dividing aspects which follow from peculiarities of individual recipients with special educational needs. The choice of suitable reading materials for children with special educational needs is based on results of a long-term literary-historical research.
