Citation
Description The publication deals with problems of families with children with health disadvantage. It focuses on the contemporary family, its sociological context and psychological aspects. The author of the publication brings forward the evolution of the family in Czech history. The focus of this publication is in chapters referring to families with disadvantaged children. In these parts, the author is concerned with the dynamics of families, the influence of disabled children on their siblings` life and the role of grandparents in care for the disabled child. According to the author, the attitudes of parents of children with health disadvantages easily move on the acceptance – resignation scale. In accordance with literary sources she feels that it is definitely positive for a disabled child when its parents concentrate on creating a real social place for her/him inside the family, rather than on giving her/him special support and attention. Health of parents who provide long-term care for a child with health disadvantage is contingent on the extent and structure of social support; social support also influences the occurrence of parents’ burnout syndrome. In this book, the evolution of a family is compared to horse stumbling over the barriers. The publication presents fictitious stories of twenty families who stumble while caring for children with health disadvantages. It is supported by 8-year-long research in the field of families with health disadvantaged children and 27 years of experience in psychological consultancy to people with disabled children.
